This week, a series of leaked Instagram DMs attributed to Call Me By Your Name actor Armie Hammer were leaked on the internet, along with accusations of abuse and manipulation.Trigger warning: the DMs are extremely violent, and explore sexual fantasies about cannibalism, mutilation, and drinking blood. Hammer was scheduled to start filming Shotgun Wedding opposite Jennifer Lopez this month, but he has stepped down from the role, saying he wanted to stay with his family. This was his statement on the DM controversy to Variety:
“I’m not responding to these bullsh-t claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic. Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that.”
The production also gave a brief statement, saying, “Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision.”
His role will now be recast. The debate around his DMs still rages online, with many people disbelieving that they’re really his. Others believe it’s wrong to share consensual sexts exploring fantasies without permission. But what if they weren’t just fantasies?https://twitter.com/annabroges/status/1349585800334356480
Just Jared reported that writer Jessica Ciencin Henriquez, who dated Hammer after he split with his wife last summer, confirmed the leaked DMs were real, as was Hammer’s tendency towards abuse.
She has since gone private on Twitter, but JustJared also reported that she responded to Instagram model Paige Lorenze, who dated Hammer in December, when Lorenze asked, “Anyone got a good therapist?”
To which Henriquez quote-RTed, “Yeah girl, I’ll send you her number,” with a winky-face emoticon.
