The House of Representatives intends to approach Facebook and Twitter to open offices for them in Iraq.

A member of the Parliamentary Media and Communications Committee, Alaa al-Rubaie, told the Iraqi newspaper Al-Sabah today, Sunday, that “there is an agreement that there should be a law to preserve the privacy of electronic data and information, and their ownership of state institutions.”

And he called for the need for Iraq to have good relations with social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, to adhere to the privacy of dealing in a country like Iraq where rumors are spread or some public or religious figures are being challenged.

Al-Rubaie revealed that there are “international gates of influence in Iraq through which any website can be allowed to operate in the country,” noting that “there is a tendency to invite these sites to open offices in Iraq and to abide by the instructions and laws issued by it, in coordination with the concerned authorities.”
